Starting in Equity Research Questions
Hi all. I’m in my final few months at my university before starting in the workforce. I have a few questions about preparing.
Is it worth it to take my CFA level 1 while I’m in my final few months of schooling?
Any recommended courses for equity research modeling such as FMVA or BIWS?
I can answer Q1. Only do it if you plan to complete the CFA. Otherwise it's completely pointless. And only plan to complete the CFA if you aim (or might aim) to move towards LO AM. Otherwise, really no one cares and ultimately that's what the CFA is for (L3 focuses a lot on portfolio management).
I want to do PM for my career at a hedge fund
So... Not LO AM.
Wouldn't hurt but not a huge benefit
Need to ask yourself why you want the CFA and whether you intend to complete it.
CFA is a long and intense commitment with hundreds of hours of study needed for each level. The cost is not that great all things considered. If you are sure that you can commit the effort across the years, then sure go for it, it will help for sure if you are looking at ER > PM roles!
