This may be a silly question but genuinely curious. When switching firms, do you tend to keep your exact same coverage? Have to RE initiate on everything with detailed reports sounds brutal.

You always have to re-initiate when switching firms
Yes you have to re-initiate on everything so it is a bit of a hassle. You usually only do it b/c you are getting a nice paybump + upfront bonus. Lots of guys who switch though keep their re-initiations on the briefer side. As for your coverage, depends on what you want and what is available. Yes usually the highest synergy is just covering everything you were covering before. Sometimes you bump into other analysts and may have to give up names etc.
