Tips for a successful Sophomore summer wanting to go into Equity Research

Does anyone have any tips as to what are the best things I should be doing over the summer. Other than interning, I have a lot of free time. I will be going into my junior year, so I want to set myself up well starting the school year and I am hoping to intern at a BB bank in research next year.

Educate yourself! During my summers, I read investment books, study investor presentations and performed my own investment analysis. Now, I own and operate a marginally successful equity research firm. If you want to intern at a bank, I suggest you learn how to model. The sell-side places great emphasis on financial modeling. Learning the in's and out's of a DCF will differentiate yourself among other summer interns. The BEST book for financial modeling (and equity analysis in general) is "Valuation" by McKinsey & Associates.

Good Luck!

Thank you. I have been reading a lot of investment books so far and keeping up on all current events in the market. I really need to start learning to model but getting started is the hardest part. I'll take a look at that book, because it should help me get started.

Focus hard on a particular industry to become specialized. ER people are specialists in specific sectors. People will be very impressed when you are so young and in college, and already know volumes about a specific industry.

I started as a sophomore following biotechnology, not knowing squat... Many years later, you could ask me about what I think about Twitter or Facebook stocks and I'd have no clue what to tell you; now ask me about gene-editing immunology companies and I'd be able to spit plenty of fire..
