What to do if your boss is giving you busy work?

On an ER team of 3 (1 MD and 2 associates). The other associate has been on the team for 2 years before me.

I have been given work such as filing my MDs expenses (I’ll do it not complaining), never get to do any real modeling work at all etc.

What do I do? Legit the team can lose me and it wouldn’t change anything.

Currently looking for exit opps right now. I’m not complaining per se, but part of the appeal of entry level roles is that you get paid to learn.

Work is easy right now and life is good (seemingly) but I would like to develop skills for the future.

Why are you filling out expense reports for your MD

? That’s what admin is for unless the expense report is relate to a specific project that requires specific project info that’s out of admin’s knowledge domain. You need to take initiatives and talk to your MD on the role expectations and what you’re looking to learn.

Man idk… he said that the assistant has been slacking and they’ve been behind.

I’m gonna dip asap. Don’t see myself on this team long term. And again not trying to sound entitled but I didn’t get my MD to be doing this kinda of work. Really thought I could use my knowledge and background to help with therapeutics, but clearly my MD doesn’t see it this way.

I've had to work with these ***hole MD's before, have you been doing admin stuff for a while? Some treat it as you proving you can do basic stuff so they can trust you with more, others legit just abuse you with this bs and you need to lateral.

Try to setup weekly meetings with your MD (should be receptive, especially as your junior) and in each one, ask what his expectations of you are, and what you can do to match that. Then do some work to prove your competence, and build on that each week.

Also if you're close with the other associates, ask them if they had to do the same thing in the past? Would be a good indicator.

Big red flag if they aren't receptive / willing to help you develop after trying that.
