Who's starting an FT ER associate job this summer? Come join in!

Hey guys,

I am gonna start my ER program with a buyside firm in Boston this summer as I graduate in May. To be honest with you, I've been slacking and all I can think of right now is Spring Break and graduation. But I guess it's also about time to think about how to best prepare for full time work. I haven't really read any books yet or researched on any exams. I read here some people said that they wanna complete Series 7, 63, 86/87 within a few months of the job and I'm like "wow, maybe i gotta think about that too lol".

While you may need your 7/63 (don't think you do but you never know), you definitely won't have to take the 86/87. The 86/87 are designed for research analysts on the sell side. Like the above poster said, focus on taking CFA L1 in December. Reach out to your boss or HR or whoever you feel comfortable talking to and ask about the next steps in signing up and ordering test materials. I'm sure you know the test is a beast and that you'll need ample time to put in the necessary hours to pass.

Other than that, I would say read as much as you can on the industry you cover and learn about the companies you follow. For learning the companies, I recommend reading earnings transcripts, investor presentations, sell-side research and maybe 10k/10q's if you really wanted to dig deeper on some issues you came across. If you do all of that, which is completely unnecessary, you should be in a pretty good place come June when you start your job.

Yahh, no it's not with Fidelity, but another mutual fund family. Putnam, MFS and a couple of others all recruit undergrad for research associate position so I was hoping to hear back from more people on here. During the interview, the analysts talked a lot about the importance of either taking the CFA or going to MBA. I think I'll take the CFA and move up gradually. Taking out 2 years for MBA and huge loan doesn't sound like fun. My hours are like sooo amazing.. I don't have to work weekends at all lol.

Wonder where's the best place to start preparing for CFA ? ?!?
