How much did you spend on your suits?

I have one $800 suit and about 4-5 $250 suits.

did you build that inventory over a few years? Or bought majority prior to starting work?

You guys spend too much fucking money on clothes, Jesus Christ. Good thing I don't want to work in New York, I hope Chicago isn't like that. I would rather have a nice house/car over a brand named 2,000-dollar suit... but I guess that is just a Midwest thing since we like big houses compared to those tiny New York apartments or California houses.

I don't know what exactly "bespoke" is but if you're referring to getting something tailored I can just hop down to Mexico and get a tailored suit for 60 bucks, along with custom boots too, you guys pay too much for the same shit. Also have a friend from Shanghai who brings be back nice Presidential knock-off Rolexes for 15 bucks.

bespoke is a british word. it means "to be spoken for." you get a fully custom suit cut for your body. the measurments are taken, a baste pattern is made for your body, and the suit is handmade. Bespoke.

Well that's a pretty gay word. Hey man it's not a brand name it's "bespoke." Seriously no one is going to know what the fuck that means. I still don't see how "to be spoken for" means tailored made.

The word came to be when customers would reserve measures of cloth to be made into suits, primarily on Savile Row in London. Bespoke suits still have brand names, usually the names of the tailors or shops that make them. And trust me, everyone will know what you mean when you say "bespoke." Whether or not they will care and/or be impressed that you are bragging about how much you paid for a suit is another story..

its an everywhere thing. yes, the established Savile Row makers carry brand names, i.e. Hunstman, Kilgour..., but many out of the USA are not branded

agree with Dan/ game theory...bespoke is definitely one rung above just getting a brand name suit off the shelf.

For most people, a good alterations tailor will be fine. For people will slightly peculiar builds, a made-to-measure suit would probably fit the bill.

My personal point of view is that at age 22-25, buying SR bespoke is a waste of money since your body is going to go through alot of change in the next 10 years. I think HK bespoke is a pretty good deal, especially if you buy the fabric (cost is probably less than an on-sale Zegna or Canali)..

I reckon suit tells alot about the persons style and passion for quality. I dislike going after brand names although they look crap on you. I would only for for style and fit and quality (brands like armani do very well at all these, so does zegna)

What planet are you on? Navy is a staple conservative color. If anything "black" is an instant credibility killer with clients..especially old school senior executives.

Dark charcoal and dark navy. the cornerstones of the IB wardrobe.

i think as long as the suit isn't some funky color like lime green, it doesn't really matter if you wear blue or charcoal...as long as it looks good on you

Tons of men I've worked with shop eBay for suits/ties. Any given day there's tons of Loro Piana on eBay. Since you got such a great deal, spend some $$ to tailor to your size.

eBay is sketchy for electronics etc. I found it's not so sketchy for clothes, shoes.

I used to purchase handbags at full retail before, used them and then recoup at least 40% of their value on eBay. Nice recovery I think. Now, I just search eBay first and resist paying full retail again. Heck, I sell my used jeans on eBay :-)

just be careful about getting fake shit on ebay. 99% of designer stuff is fake. general rule of "if it's too good to be true, it probably is" still applies.

yeah but you can still figure out if its fake pretty easily...usually it'll say replica, style, or the name will be misspelled

im currently a junior in undergrad and im applying for a banking internship next spring. i was wondering how many suits, shirts and ties did you guys before you started your internship/full-time? it seems like you need to spend half of what you earn before you even earn it on professional attire..

you'll probably have to spend 1000 bucks on something decent. 600 on a decent suit, and the rest on shirts/ties

Hey for summer analyst all you need is one suit (if you work in a business casual atmosphere). You don't go to client meetings that often. When you interact with clients wear the same suit and change the shirt and tie. They are not going to notice, and if they do, who the fuck cares you are an intern.

BTW Bluefly.com and tyrwhitt have sales on great quality suits all the time. On bluefly you can get some armani or what every designer name you want for usually over 40% off the ticketed price. Check there before you purchase something at a store.

I always check out the store, try it on then make my way to bluefly.com and buy the same suit online rather than in the store (you just need to bring it to a tailor later on when you get it in the mail).

Who has had suits made by Astor and Black? Seems like an awesome deal for bespoke suits and shirts, but I'm not sure of the quality, or how they do it so cheaply.

Just build it over time. Buying a couple of shirts here and there. As for suits, it all depends on you. Some guys where suits all the time, others almost never. 2-3 decent suits are more than enough as an analyst. There's nothing more hilarious (and ridiculed around the office) then a analyst with clothes befitting an MD.

i read somewhere that you shouldn't get super 180 because it's threads are so fine that they would damage if worn everyday. Apparently 100 is more than sufficient for an everyday suit and 120 should also only be worn on occasion (e.g. important meeting, presentation or going on tv).

Ermen is right. Super 180's and above are not to be worn everyday. They are more for special events. They are too fine and can be damaged with 10+ dry cleanings.

100's and 120's are the best for everyday use. They can put up with some abuse.

they rated a bunch of different brands of suits blah, blah, blah....the winner was an Arnold Brant suit from sierratradingpost.com I looked at the website and they have some legit stuff. If you can find a decent tailor you can probably save some really good cash on their site.

If you need suits for interviewing go in hobo garb. It will make you stand out from the crowd.
