Post Covid it’s been more casual. Pencil skirts not common anymore. Would definitely invest in 1-2 nice suits (Theory is a good option). Aritzia has a lot of good casual business attire. Zara has inexpensive blazers you can throw over a standard black dress. Colors are common but muted; think burgundy, forest green, etc. vs. pink/yellow. Keep a pair of comfortable heels at your desk. Also guys are idiots you can wear the same thing 5 days in a row and they won’t notice. Most importantly just nothing low cut or too short that would draw attention.

Yeah I just think that the girl has spares of the same clothes and just rotates through different clothes that look the same. I do that since there are only so many solid colors and combinations that guys can really wear and I don’t want to have only like 3 pairs on hand and have to keep washing them two times a week. I do try to make sure colors alternate but that’s probably the lowest priority item when I get ready and there have been many days or even the next day when I realize that even though I wore a different shirt it was the same color as the previous day(s).

Massive hoop earrings, lip fillers, dyed hair, massive amounts of makeup that would only be suitable at a festival/rave, explicit tattoos (tramp stamps), nails that looks like claws, high heels, stripper fishnets, pigtails/braids and crop tops seem to be the norm lately with globohomo, DEI and whatnots.

The serious answers here are right on - pretty casual after covid - suit pants and a blouse-y top is just fine, or any work-appropriate dress - around/just above knee length and not formfitting. No need for pencil skirts unless you like them, I see a few people who still like to rotate them into their wardrobe. Some groups are okay with skinny black jeans but obviously wait and see on that.

Aritzia, Ann Taylor, Theory are all very appropriate. Any color but neon, bright pink, or a super crazy pattern is fine. I'd invest in some nice quality black, navy, and gray pants and then fill in with cheaper tops. You probably already have at least a few appropriate tops in your closet, anything with good coverage that looks a bit more formal than a t shirt should work.

Grab some pants at Banana 🍌 Republic, some loafers at Nordstrom and multiple blouses. Kitten heels are okay if you can keep up with anyone walking fast outside. Grab a few knee length or longer corporate dresses. Think Kate Middleton / Megan Merkle / Amal Clooney etc. Don't dress better than any senior leadership staff.. aka no St. John's.

I do not normally dress casual, but I have been dressing this way for a long time. On weekends, I wear casual dress slacks, crew zip up or pullover sweater and a polo (golf/tennis tee). 👍

I'd get J. Crew's Cameron pants in black and charcoal (they're a stable) then add in some basic pointed toe or rounded black flats and blouses from Aritzia, Nordstrom, Club Monaco, Vince, Theory, Brooks Brothers etc.

I'd also get some basic sheath/suiting dresses, this is basically what you wear if you're not in slacks. Ann Taylor has very reasonable prices on them, and if you're near a Brooks Brothers outlet they usually have a decent selection too.

Stick to dark colors, black, charcoal, navy, maroon and then for lighter colors stick to white, off white, pale blue and camel. Navy is appropriate but not common in NYC offices.

thanks for taking the time to answer my question!! I really appreciate it and it is all definitely great advice. I didn't know that navy wasn't common though...good thing you said so as I was about to buy a navy blazer

Reposting my post about my time in SA at an IB:

I myself largely stuck to suits during my internship since that's what people wore where I worked.

For tops, I went to Ann Taylor and Nordstrom. For blazers and pants/skirts, I went with Theory and Ann Taylor. Hugo Boss and Ted Baker are classics but a bit more expensive, with Banana Republic and J. Crew being of high quality but a quite a bit less expensive too. Express is also great if you're looking for something fairly cheap but decent. Beware about Theory tho, since some of their clothing size-wise is a bit funky if you're not super skinny. I used the classic Longchamp tote as well as mentioned above. It's also worth noting that the J. Crew Cameron Pant is one of the most common pieces of work attire among women I've worked with, so I would recommend those for bottoms.

For shoes, I stuck to flats since I'm fairly tall, but most people I worked with wore heels around office and flats into and out of office.

Additionally, my current company has much more casual attire post-COVID-19, so I wouldn't be surprised if everything I've put down is more formal than needed.

If you have any doubts about color, just stick to black especially if you are in NYC. In other cities, Navy should be ok too.

Good luck with your summer!
