Is 6'1 considered short nowadays?

I was just talking about this with my girlfriend and she's of the opinion that 6'1 is on the shorter side, although not a dealbreaker in dating. Her justification was that in upper-class white social circles (NYC high finance for instance), the average height is already pushing 6'2-6'3) and that 6'1 is barely at the lower range of male model height, of which there are an abundance of in NYC. In addition, attractive guys she sees on social media frequently (think Kelly Oubre Jr/Jacob Elordi) are 6'5-6'7, so 6'1 seems tiny in comparison. She also says that the rule of thumb should be that a female model (5'10 on average) should be able to wear heels (4 inches on average) and have their date/partner be noticeably taller than them (so at least 6'3 in shoes).

I also thought about this, and some of my friends who are 6'1 or 6'0 look awkwardly short in group pictures especially around taller broad-shouldered attractive guys. When my analyst class took a big group picture during training, the guys who were 6'0-6'1 looked like dwarfs next to the 5'8-5'9 gals in heels. Additionally, I remember during fraternity/sorority mixers or formals/semi-formals in college, the guys who were under 6'3 sometimes had their date awkwardly slouch when wearing heels to avoid being the same height or taller than the guys.

This has to be a troll but given work is slow today I will bite hahaha.

In regular society/an average city 6'1 is definitely tall. I am 6'2 and when I go walk around a mall in Denver/Chicago/Memphis/Montreal I notice how much taller I am than everyone (at least 95%+).

In cities with wealth (OC/Vancouver/Scottsdale/NYC/Dallas/etc.) yes people definitely get taller and all of a sudden that difference starts to fade a little bit.

I think what is important here is that if the comments your gf are making are real, and not just your insecurities projected/you talking to yourself, then she is not the one you want to be with.... Find something else or live a life of unenjoyment!

There is more than one way to get there. I'd rather have 30 chapters than 3000 pages.

Your girlfriend is either a hilarious troll or a terminally online dork.

Could be both.

I’m 6’ and the only time I’ve ever felt short is playing sports. In every day life I am still taller than most.

Calling 6’1” dudes short is kind of hilarious if it bothers them, but it’s also not based in reality.

By "taller than most", you're including kids, women, old people, poor people and non-white people. If you only use your aged 20-45 upper-class European-descent peers (the dominant demographic in high finance), you'll likely notice you're on the shorter end.

One of the benefits of a tall human being is command presence. When they step in the room, people get the job done. This is why most CEOs are tall.

Ignoring the fact that this is a pretty poor attempt at a racist troll, it's true that 6'1" isn't very tall these days. I am between 6'2" and 6'3" and I don't consider myself to be "tall". Obviously I'm taller than the vast majority of people, but if you're in an area populated by generally high earning / affluent individuals I'd estimate 6'0" to be about average for guys. Statistically a little under 1/20 guys should be taller than me, but if I'm out at a bar in one of these areas the proportion is probably above 1/10.

Quite a lot of non-European (ethnicity-wise not nationality) affluent/high earning people in the US nowadays, even in NYC due to tech/EDII and whatnot. Also a lot of Europeans (although not what we traditionally think of as affluent/socially dominant) like Italians for instance are also on the shorter side. This is assuming you're in NYC. In SF/LA/Miami it's even worse. The correlation between social standing, affluence and being WASP/German is not nearly as strong today.

Then you do a poor job of taking in everyone in a crowd and are focusing just on those taller than you. Im similar height to you and am taller than almost everyone I meet, and if someone is taller than me they are fucking tall

Nope, you just don't frequent similar places I guess. I'm a very good judge of height. I'm used to being average since I did varsity rowing in HS / college. On average, in setting with people of all ages and backgrounds, I of course feel tall. If I go to an Asian club (I am Asian) I feel like a giant. But in an area where everyone is 22-28 and high earning / likely from an affluent background it is expected that the average height will be higher than the overall average. Maybe not 6'0", but I would put money on the average height of men my age being over 5'11" where I am. I'm far from the only one who notices this.

The fact that you say you're taller than almost everyone you meet just kind of proves what I'm saying. Different circles.

Tbh idk if women even truly know what 6 foot looks like. Girls will all me 6 foot and I’m 5’10 and a half. Then they will call my friend who is only 5’10: 5’8. I think as long as your talked then her she will likely think your tall.
