AM equities to SM L/S HF?

Received an offer for a SA position at a top AM (blackrock, fidelity, wellington etc) for equities with a team that also has a pod that runs as an internal hedge fund. Given that I hope to end up working a SM HF down the line, would starting out my career in AM equities and working in an internal hedge fund give me a good enough background for SM HF recruiting. Also if anyone has any experience starting out career in buyside rather than sell side, let me know your thoughts. Thanks a lot!
