Breaking in - Currently a junior at Michigan's Ross school of business
Hey all
Im currently a junior at Michigan's Ross school of business and love working with equities. I'd probably want to end up in a hedge fund.
I have a lot of pressure, though, to pursue IB because it apparently pays and trains the best in addition to giving best exit opps.
Any ideas on what I should do? Intern in IB this summer and see how I like it? Try to get a HF intern? S&T?
Thanks~
i really think you should search the forum. your question has been answered numerous times! :-)
It is a tough year. The best interviewees that I've come across this year have done substantial work/research to demonstrate their interest in finance. For example, I spoke to a junior who is on level 3 of the CFA. Did a practice interview with another guy who came with 3 great trade pitches. He was able to defend his theses and discuss his conviction in the trades. I was impressed.
A lot of people say they have a passion for finance and attend so-and-so undergrad b-school. Dime a dozen. Those that have a clear passion are doing stuff above and beyond their course work and b.s. business "fraternities" and investment clubs.
I just want to point out to you that the junior is probably lying that he is a L3 candidate. You can only register for the first exam as a SENIOR in college. That's why you will never meet someone like that. The last time I checked they do not verify what year of college a person is attending when registering for the exam. Anyway, the kid has bad character by clearly lying on either his resume or with the CFA Institute. http://www.cfainstitute.org/cfaprogram/process/enter/Pages/cfa_program_… Good luck with supervising that kid if you decide to hire him HA.
