Current SS analyst.
Outside of clients, networking and recruiters, where can I come across buy-side / hedge fund jobs? Not finding much on Indeed.

Probably, and buy side is shrinking so that doesn't help.

The Bloomberg terminals JOBS function is a very high quality source of jobs. Indeed/Linkedin is like fishing in the Atlantic,
There are only a few terminals at my current company. We have the professional access with unlimited logins, but it means we can't use the anywhere feature.
I have never tried using them to search for jobs because I am in the office. Does anyone know if the company would have any way of finding out? Does it save your searches, can someone download the data of its users, etc?

Just make sure to escape until you go to some home screen or open some new thing in the same screen you open tabs in. Won't save searches
Agree. Some very high quality, off the market positions can be found on JOBS. Also a great source for positions at start-ups / smaller firms who don't want to use a headhunter
I've started noticing that BBG postings are sparse and skewed towards quant/trading roles...is this the norm or just reflective of awful job mkt
HF job market is very opaque and for every 4 positions filled through word of mouth/recruiter/networking, only 1 or less is filled through a publicly posted position. Numbers are anecdotal/rough, but you get the idea.
And then as all others said, it's just a very thin market with few open positions and even fewer that are publicly advertised.
What is an SS analyst? Special Situations? Shouldn't that give you lots of contacts

Call me stupid but I legit had no idea that SS was short for sellside. Maybe just coming from a banking background had no idea that was a thing. Had to read all the other posts to surmise it.
Anyways - I feel like if you're a desk analyst on the credit side, hedge funds love those. Distressed Debt desk analyst seats are great for transitioning. No idea about publishing equity research guys
I never understood why SS research guys get less love than people from banking...
I don't get it either, but then I realize how hard it was for me to recruit from the SS.
The answer is: still more ex-bankers on the buy-side than there are ex-SS'ers.
I always rank order it as:
1 current buysiders
2 SS ER
3 I bankers
We don't need model monkeys on our team, we want people who can pitch ideas within 4-6 weeks from start date. Former I bankers have the flattest ramp IMO.
The quality of modeling in banking is higher than in sell-side research and the fund you get hired at can teach you how to think in their framework. Some of the sell-side models i see are absolute garbage.
Modeling isn’t rocket science. Coming up with good investment ideas is far more valuable
How do L/S equity teams at large multi-manager hedge funds make investment decisions and come up with ideas? How do they do their research? What is the time frame? Do they try finding companies that will beat earnings before the announcement and then sell them after the call? If so, how do they find companies that they think will beat earnings? Responses will be greatly appreciated.
