Cut from Bridgewater first year class
I work at Bridgewater and am worried about getting cut from the first year class. Does anyone know what kind of severance they give or what sort of opportunities might exist afterward? It’s just a brutal place to work, even if you buy into the culture in an abstract way.
I haven't worked at BW but know/have worked with a dozen+ people who have had stints there. I have no idea on the severance, etc but I'll say a few things:
Main thing is don't get wrapped up into it and let it consume your identity/personal life. There's a pull to it that makes that very possible, so do as much as you can to separate yourself from it and remember your value is not tied to some arbitrary person's view of your performance.

Likely higher verbal iq but definitely not overall
yes fair, though makes their investment engineers all the more impressive as they can actually speak english
personally know a few ppl at BW and can attest that place is a cult and a shitshow. smart people? maybe some but thats like all organizations. talent pool there is subpar in general imo. OP - dont be discouraged that you might be cut from a shitshow cult the scamdalio is running. the guy is known as a buffoon anyway with the lackluster returns.
u might be right regarding the culture and everything else but their returns are quite good ( BW had the highest cumulative PnL for a HF since inception till Citadel took over last year)
Where into “tech” do Bridgewater folks go?
Little surprised that’s the exit op, unless they’re doing something adjacent to AI / coding.
Most people, including the Investment Associates (not just Investment Engineers) have at least some coding ability. They moved away from the English Lit / Philosophy archetype they used to hire for in the 2010s.
That being said, there are also just a lot of people from finance (outside of BW as well) that go into ops, GTM, product, etc. But its not clear cut, each startup has different names/requirements. 'Forward Deployed Strategist' or 'AI Strategist' is really common now (model from Palantir)
Worry about performing instead of severance if you get cut? What’s wrong with kids these days
what does your baseball card stat sheet say about you and what you need to improve on (i forget what they call it) ? Are you below 50% ranking in your class as an IA? Can you display to decision makers you have untapped massive future upside? How can you display to decision makers you have upside if underpdorming now? (These are rhetorical, dont answer publicly)
Don't fret about getting axed from bw. Takes a certain flavor of autism to succeed as an IA there. Theyre also really good about helping you find a job post bw.
Just go hard asf until you get axed and always keep the network. God speed
Probably for the best IMO, most of the people who work there have BW as their first and last gig in finance. Nobody thinks like them, and I don't mean that as a compliment.
Yeah I realized this too. Why is this the case? Isn’t BW quite prestigious?
It is a decent firm, in the same way that BlackRock is a decent firm, brand name does attract talent at the start. But with experience you will know it is not in the same league as the top macro shops
Count the number of PMs at tier 1 funds that got their main training from Bridgewater.

RUN!!!
Whoever MS'ed me, keep meatriding Ray Dalio, drinking the BWater Kool Aid, and congratulate me on Dartmouth.
Congrats on radical transparency!
Ray Dalio is Yertle the Turtle.
And Yertle the Turtle is the King of the Mud.
No pun intended, as Yertle the Turtle was written by Dr. Seuss, a Dartmouth College alum, and Ray loved to recruit from Dartmouth College.
