DE Shaw References
Hi guys and girls,
I recently completed the interview process at DE Shaw. After 4 years in the industry, I was surprised to hear they ask for 4 references. I was wondering if any of you had any ideas on the questions they ask the referees.
I try to be strategic about the people I select as my referees since I read elsewhere (as well as confirmed by HR) that getting to this stage does not guarantee an offer.

The questions can be pretty in depth. Generally from what I understand they want to know whether you’re ok, good, or great - as in they understand there are multiple tiers of being “qualified” and they want the highest.
