Going from consulting to a HF
Pretty much what the title says, not a ton of overlap other than that I’ve done some equity research. I understand the concepts but not sure how to direct my efforts into actually breaking in and getting interviews. Just cold outreach via LinkedIn?
Not much help but the pod near us has an ex consultant but they did a stint in sell side equity research first
I have an offer for an equity research role, how fast would a reasonable transition be? 1 year?
Yes. You could do 6 months.
2 years+ more realistic. You want to make sure you acquire the skills, and you're going to have zero contact with buyside clients in your first year.
As someone who used to work in consulting, had a few non finance / consulting jobs in between, then transitioned into a HF, take the ER offer if you feel it's 'good enough' even if not excellent. Really anything outside of banking/ER makes the battle to break in much more difficult. I landed my role through a combination of network + 3 people getting poached by other firms before me.
I think that is going to be the move, it hurts to take a temporary pay cut for ER though. My job is pretty cushy and hours are actual 40 hour work weeks
You’re just not qualified for HF if you’ve never had any experience working with public equities. Ask yourself, why would someone hire you today? What do you bring to the table?
