Growth Equity --> HF: What's the path?

Current college senior here entering a very reputable growth equity firm (>$10B AUM) out of school. Hypothetically, what's the path to top HF for someone in my spot? GE --> PE --> MBA --> HF?

Insights appreciated!

Could you potentially expand on that some, what caliber of GE funds were they at? Specific sector? IBD background? How long they were in GE role.. any info just so I can understand the progression would be great. Thanks.
