How To Break Into IB/AM/ER/HF from Commercial Banking

I know it's going to be an uphill battle.

About me:

  • 23F from Bangladesh (where IB hasn't really taken off, HFs don't exist, AM opportunities are very limited and not very great pay)
  • Summer internship at P72 in Singapore (Economist team), thanks to this unique partnership they have with my uni to help advance women in high finance
  • Currently in a front office role at an intl MM bank in commercial banking (relationship management team for some of the largest corporates in the country) in Bangladesh

The P72 internship piqued my interest in a career in investment mgmt. I tried to get into their Academy program after the internship but got dinged because I don't have what it takes yet. I understand what I am looking for does not exist in my current geography so will have to switch sooner than later if I want to make that a reality.

What can I do? What options do I have? Is it possible to break into equity research without an MBA? I'd have to wait at least another year or two before I have the minimum exp required - but I don't have the patience for that.

I've been in my current role for a year now and would much rather spend my prime years working on the kind of stuff I am interested in. I'm learning plenty about credit and client relationships but I want to move on to a more analytical role. Most of my time is now spent talking to clients, solving their problems, and tending to their queries - all of which feels like grunt work. Don't see myself doing this for another 2 years.

I was considering MSF programs as a means to change my geography and get access to the recruiting funnel into my desired roles. But most are <1 year, and then there's the thing with being an international student in the US. I'd much rather do the CFA if only for the content.

What if I tried to laterally move within my bank to another site e.g. Hong Kong? But is the switch from commercial banking in HK to IB / ER in HK realistic? I don't know the local languages there so the odds are stacked against me it seems.
