I think I love my job?
I've gotten offers with more money and similar prestige at other firms, but I keep falling down on them because I'm just too afraid to lose my current managers (who are amazing) and geography (west coast). Am I in love with my job? Or am I just too stupid to know better?
Details:
I'm paid total comp of $175-200k, and my market value is easily $250k based on real offers. These are high cost of living areas, major metros
My work life balance is great, and I'm nervous that places which can pay more, also expect a lot more in terms of hours but also nights/weekends availability. When I take vacation, I really truly get the day off and can unplug. My manager is a proponent of mental health and self-care
My role is career track and leads to the PM seat in 10-15 yrs
I should probably also mention that the actual work is interesting and engaging and I'm given a lot of freedom and responsibilities, but this is similar to other lean workplaces
I wouldn’t leave. You’ve essentially hit the jackpot In Finance as your getting paid well and you don’t have a garbage, abusive manager
Enjoy it and learn. Perspectives will change 2-3 years down the line as you go through life and career develops. Maybe then you may consider other options, or maybe you'll still be liking your current role and sticking with it.
TLDR: Hard to say. You're not delusional. Go with the flow. (and congrats!)
Hard to put a price on liking your company and boss. From my perspective you seem to be making the right decision. Can always reassess comp down the road but those spreads aren't big enough to justify leaving in my view.
Stay where you are.
Another way to think about it is if you were at a place where it wasn't bad, but you can easily identify areas where the experience could be made better, would you pay $50k – $75k for those experiences.
Most people tend to suffer from “grass is greener” syndrome so the fact that you aren’t is an important sign. And that the fact that you know you already have viable plan B’s in case your current seat doesn’t work out (as evidenced by the offers) is an important plus.
That said - I am surprised you have been recruiting for other offers if you like your firm so much? Recruiting seems to be a pretty work-intensive process, especially the case study rounds.
