London/Switzerland Event-Driven HF Recruiting

Hi all, AN1 at EB (EVR/MOE/PJT) in NYC interested in event-driven (merger arb, spinoffs) HF recruiting. I want to move to Europe for personal reasons, and see the most opportunity in London, but also open to Switzerland. What does the recruiting process look like for these types of funds, should I cold email? Or are there HHs that I should reach out to for these opps?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about event-driven hedge fund recruiting in London and Switzerland:

  1. Recruiting Process:

    • In London, most hedge funds recruit through a combination of headhunters (HHs) and personal networks. For event-driven strategies like merger arbitrage and spinoffs, headhunters often focus on market-neutral platforms or specific funds with these strategies.
    • Switzerland has a smaller hedge fund scene compared to London, so opportunities may be more limited. Networking and direct outreach could play a larger role here.
  2. Headhunters:

    • London has a well-established network of Tier 1 buyside recruiters. These headhunters are key players in connecting candidates with hedge funds. Some of the top names include:
      • Blackwood Group
      • Walker Hamill
      • PER (Private Equity Recruitment)
      • Dartmouth Partners
    • For Switzerland, headhunters may not be as prominent, so leveraging your personal network and directly reaching out to funds could be more effective.
  3. Cold Emailing:

    • Cold emailing can be a viable strategy, especially for smaller funds or those not actively using headhunters. When cold emailing:
      • Be concise and highlight your relevant experience (e.g., your AN1 role at an EB and interest in event-driven strategies).
      • Tailor your emails to the specific fund, showing knowledge of their strategy and recent deals.
  4. Networking:

    • Personal networks are crucial, especially for moving across regions. Prime brokers, sell-side sales/research teams, and buyside contacts can be valuable connections. These individuals can vouch for your skills and help you get in front of the right people.
  5. London vs. Switzerland:

    • London offers significantly more opportunities in the hedge fund space, particularly for event-driven strategies. The city is a hub for global finance, with a wide range of funds and strategies.
    • Switzerland, while offering a high quality of life, has a smaller and more niche financial market. If you have personal ties or a strong preference for Switzerland, focus on networking and targeting specific funds in Geneva or Zürich.

To maximize your chances, consider combining all these approaches: engage with headhunters, leverage your network, and use cold emailing strategically. Good luck with your move to Europe!
