Major for HF

I am currently a high school student that wants to get in a field like private equity or hedge funds. I was thinking of majoring in finance but I’ve heard that majoring in a mathematical field like computer science or statistics is better. Which would be most useful in landing a job as a hedge fund or private equity analyst, and hoping I could get promoted from there?

It depends on what type of hedge fund you are targeting. Some funds are very quantitative and trade strictly on algorithms, only accepting STEM candidates. Other L/S funds are more project-based and focus on financial analysis for investment decisions. For these funds + private equity, a finance/accounting degree will help you understand the modeling/analysis process better, but for quant funds, a mathematics/similar degree will be required. It's worth noting that you can get into PE with a math degree so long as you learn financial analysis, but it will be tough to land certain hedge fund seats with a business degree. I suggest you do more research into the field to figure out which path you want to take, but a math major + accounting minor would likely give you the academic basis for any of those options.

Thank you for the advice! Which fund-type do you think is the best for promotion (I eventually want to get to a higher position in a firm), a fundamental type hedge fund or a quantitative one?

Doesn’t matter. If u already know what u want to do in hs you’re basically guaranteed a job. U have the time to put in 5k hours easy so u should be the best candidate at any interview u get
