HY/Distressed/IG trading on sellside with good P&L is a common route. Or basically routes to being a credit analyst at a HF (rx banking, levfin, direct, desk analyst) and getting sub-PM responsibility at a fund after being a senior analyst but that will be very firm dependent.
Credibility, above all else, however you build it. You need to convince people of your technical chops for deep financial analysis as well as general investment wisdom and judgement. The most obvious path is working at a successful credit fund first. Trying to launch something without experience at a successful firm will be difficult. Raising AUM is always more difficult and time consuming than anyone expects it to be.
