PE-style investing

I've seen many funds claiming to do PE-style investing in public markets but they don't seem differentiated from a lot of the long-only types. Anyone have an opinion on this phrase? I feel like I'm missing something

From what I've seen, this mainly the activist funds. Ackman I know for a fact has said something along those lines, this is supported by the fact he mainly recruits out of BX. I think the main differentiation is the hold period and the level of involvement. People who claim this investment style typically have really thorough research and 3-4 year hold periods. Those who call themselves activists love to get on the board and create change, similar to PE
