PE-style investing

I've seen many funds claiming to do PE-style investing in public markets but they don't seem differentiated from a lot of the long-only types. Anyone have an opinion on this phrase? I feel like I'm missing something

Hedge Fund Mock Interview

“He was very responsive and prepared for the meeting. He actually read the JD, resume, and looked up linkedin which sometimes other mentors doesn't actually go over those to prepare things beforehand. I appreciate his direct comments I think it saved time and actually helped me to know exactly where to improve. I also appreciated him admitting if he doesn't know about specific HF strategy. Only thing I'd suggest for him is probably sending actionable key takeaways after the meeting because other mentors did and that was very helpful. ”

From what I've seen, this mainly the activist funds. Ackman I know for a fact has said something along those lines, this is supported by the fact he mainly recruits out of BX. I think the main differentiation is the hold period and the level of involvement. People who claim this investment style typically have really thorough research and 3-4 year hold periods. Those who call themselves activists love to get on the board and create change, similar to PE.
