Physical Commodity Trader interested in Junior/Investment Analyst Role at Hedge Fund
I have 1 year of experience as a physical commodity trader. I work in the lumber market for the largest lumber trader in the united states ( Unless you are in the industry, the name will not ring a bell ). I am also on the state board of a major non-profit on the executive committee ( Irrelevant experience, but it has blown open doors ). I took the job directly out of college ( Finance / Quant. Finance. Top 50 B-school ). Previously, I had an internship for a major BB bank in college.
I have had the privilege of participating in the "strongest bull run in the history of the lumber market" & the opportunity to work directly under one of the best traders in the industry. I've made 60-80 calls a day and I've started to learned how to build my business (lots more to learn). I work in a no name city and I would to make a change.
I want to move into bigger city & I want to shift into a more analytical career to fit my skill set. I've worked with an associate at Korn Ferry who profiled my strengths and weakness' & he saw an aptitude for horizontal thinking, analysis and early stage leadership. I want to parlay my experience in the physical market into the futures/derivative market as a Junior/Investment Analyst for a Hedge Fund.
I've spoken to a Hedge Fund Manager in another industry who suggested I work for a hard money lender in my industry & then jump into the HF space.
My question for you: Do you think I could apply/network into a hedge fund today? Personally, I think I can do just about anything I set my mind on, but I have a chip on my shoulder. If any of you have any advice on how to proceed, then it would be greatly appreciated.
Full disclosure: Please, there are no "stupid answers" here . I'm an orphan & I am not saying "boo-woo, woe is me". I am saying "I don't know... what I don't know". That obvious detail that "everybody" knows, might be an important detail that I would like to know ( Ex: I just learned about head hunters). That said... blindly running forward has worked well for me so far.
AndrewThomas, shame nobody has responded. Maybe one of these topics will help:
