point72 academy recruiting process

Hello, I am an incoming IB SA at a BB, but the truth is I want to do L/S.

I want to re-recruit for point72 full time. Does anyone know what this process is like? How do I get my foot in the door?

Aside from following markets, pitching and modelling, what else can I do to prep for it?

To break into Point72's Academy program and prepare effectively, here's what you need to know based on the most helpful WSO content:

Recruiting Process Overview

  1. Initial Application: Submit your resume. If selected, you’ll likely receive a HireVue video interview as the first step.
  2. Networking Opportunities: Some candidates are invited to exclusive networking events at Point72's offices, which provide a chance to connect with professionals and current Academy members.
  3. Interview Rounds:
    • First Round: Pre-recorded video interview, often behavioral.
    • Second Round: Case assignment or interview, depending on availability.
    • Third Round: Superday, which may include technical interviews, case studies, and Bloomberg/modeling tests.
  4. Training and Placement: If accepted, the Academy provides 2,800 hours of training over 8 months, covering fundamental research, rotations with portfolio management teams, and skills like data science, consulting, and investing.

How to Get Your Foot in the Door

  • Leverage Your IB Internship: Highlight your experience at a BB, especially if it involves financial modeling, valuation, or market analysis.
  • Network Strategically: Attend Point72 events, connect with alumni or current employees, and build relationships with recruiters.
  • Tailor Your Resume: Emphasize skills relevant to L/S investing, such as stock pitches, market analysis, and technical expertise.

Preparation Tips

  1. Follow Markets: Stay updated on market trends, macroeconomic factors, and sector-specific developments.
  2. Pitch Stocks: Develop and refine your ability to pitch long and short ideas. Be ready to defend your thesis with data and insights.
  3. Modeling Skills: Practice financial modeling, including DCF, LBO, and comparable company analysis.
  4. Critical Thinking: Prepare for questions like "How would you improve a product?" or "Why would you succeed?" These test your problem-solving and self-awareness.
  5. Case Studies: Familiarize yourself with case study formats and practice synthesizing research into actionable investment theses.
  6. Programming/Data Skills: If possible, learn basic programming or data analysis tools (e.g., Python, SQL) as these are increasingly valued.

Additional Insights

  • Academy Placement: 89% of graduates are placed, with many becoming portfolio managers. The program is designed to ensure a 100% graduation rate.
  • Class Profile: While details on class size and profiles are limited, the focus is on candidates with strong analytical and research skills.

By combining your IB experience with targeted preparation and networking, you can position yourself as a strong candidate for Point72's Academy program.
