Role of Quanty (computation/analysis) in discretionary directional macro trading particularly FX/commodities?

I have a background and masters in economics. I’ve been thinking about switching to discretionary directional macro trading particularly FX, comms and a lot of advise I’ve seen point towards having a quanty skill set. I don’t think Tudor, Soros, Druckenmiller and co have a quanty background. What role does this play in daily PnL generation?

In addition are quant methodologies just technical analysis in the “traditional” way?
