Sending ideas to funds from ER
I'm preparing to make the ER->HF jump, and was thinking of showing what i can do by writing a pitch on something i don't cover and sending it to the funds I'm most interested in.
Is this a thing? I've heard of people sending w/ a basic disclaimer but would love to get some opinions before I consider doing any write-ups myself. Thanks!
Hi Earnings Szn, don't worry, the WSO Monkey Bot is here.... I'm hoping one of these links will help find your answer:
You're welcome.
Bump I’m curious on this is well. Also curious if this is a violation at all given most of the funds I would want to transfer to our also clients of my firm.
Following, curious as well.
Most funds won't hire you without seeing what you're capabale of doing in a self-directed capacity, so not only is it likely going to be required at some point during the transition/interview process, but I would start working on them and running them by any close buy-side friends of yours.
That said, I wouldn't likely send them unsolicited. Those clients likely have decent relationships with your senior, and would probably give him a heads up some non-zero % of the time.
Gotcha, so maybe start including it with applications but don’t just send out cold emails with investment pitches to clients of ours? The only thing is I know a lot of hedge funds don’t post openings online so what’s the best way to get in front of these funds without having my boss find out about it if I can’t cold contact them?
And that's the rub...outside of the tiny % that post online, your best bets are headhunters and networking. If you're on a highly ranked II team or a top BB, the headhunters will generally find you, otherwise you'll have to be proactive and reach out to them (speaking as someone not in the former category). Otherwise, client calls, dinners, NDRs, conferences, etc....start schmoozing.
Gotcha, does anybody know of a good list out there of recruiters for hedge funds specifically? Also if I recruit through channels other than cold contacting such as through head hunters and official openings, would you say there is probably a 0% chance somebody blabs to my boss?
In networking, don't you run the same risk as you outlined earlier of a client mentioning something to your boss? Or is the hope that once you develop some sort of relationship that won't happen?
