Should I take a job in a fundamental hedge fund?
Posting on a throwaway, couldn’t reveal too much info as I would like to remain confidential.
For a bit of context: Graduated with a 1st Class from a target school in Asia and have done a few previous internships - M&A at a MM IB, Investment Management at a BB AM and ER at a Regional LO Fund House. Recently got offered a FT Analyst job for a HK based fundamental HF after graduation and doing a few pre-placement research projects for them. The pay and working hours are not the best - around 1/2 of industry counterparts with a 5.5-6 day work week but it provides a great learning opportunity and career trajectory. PMs here are experienced with a training program.
Problem is the contract seems a bit off: There is there is a lock-up period of 1 year as an Analyst (which is fine) but there is an additional 2 years of lock-up upon promotion to a Senior Analyst otherwise there will be a hefty fine (> 6 figures USD if I quit during the Senior Analyst 2 year lockup). The company is justifying this with “training fees” that they would have spent on an Analyst.
I’m quite worried about the fine which I definitely wouldn’t be able to pay. Frankly, the contract seems onerous but giving up on the opportunity to break into a HF doesn’t seem ideal especially in this job market.
For now should I sign the contract, work for a year and try to exit? Would really appreciate any insights on how I should approach this!
