Starting investment analyst role in the summer (REPE), however just received an off-cycle internship offer at HF for Autumn...
I'll keep it brief:
Graduating in July, starting a role in REPE at a MM boutique fund. Comp is good and WLB is excellent however it's not really want I want to do. I've wanted to be in HFs since beginning uni and have always found macro super interesting.
Trouble is, I accepted the offer and signed for the REPE investment analyst role which begins in early July yet I just received an internship offer for a SM HF beginning in September.
Do I just work at REPE and then quit at the end of august to do the internship? Is it worth throwing away a decent seat (and destroying bridges) for the chance to get a return offer at the HF?
Tough one, would love some advice.
Cheers

To make your decision you have to weight what you're going to regret the most:
1. Missing the chance to break in the industry where you always wanted to be.
2. Lose a decent job where you don't see yourself.
Think which one is going to haunt you the most over the long-term (what-if scenarios in your head).
Also, resigning from the analyst position doesn't mean that you will burn bridges. If you explain well the rationale behind your resignation, people will in most cases be empathetic.
This is really helpful, thanks!
It's just I would have only been working there for 3 months. This firm is a small boutique and as such me leaving would leave a big dent in the analyst capacity pool. Feel like this could really piss off the MD
Then it's perhaps preferable not to start at the REPE firm at all. If you're sure that you will cause a huge damage 3 months down the line, then it's perhaps better for the firm to restart the recruitment process and reach out to the other candidates that were in the process with you. You won't be the first and certainly not the last that backtracks after signing a job offer/contract. If you're sure that you want to be in HFs then get in touch with the REPE firm to let them know that you had a better opportunity. They will have 2 months to find someone to fill the position in July which is more than enough. They cannot have hard feelings against you because this sort of things happen all the time during a recruitment process.
Sounds good - this is the path of least damage.
It's just the internship at the HF is just an internship with no gurantee of conversion. I would then be left in January, with some solid experience, but no work - will have to wait for next cycle or rely on headhunters. Do you think the risk of not converting is worth it when I could have a comfortable job for a few years and then maybe see if I can transition?
