Stupid to get an MD specifically for biotech investing?
I am a senior and will be working at a large FoF after graduation as a research analyst. I have always been passionate about biotech and it is my favorite sector by far. I don't really have the background for it as I'm studying economics (I switched out of pre-med, some regret not keeping the bio major).
Of course most, but not all people in biotech public equities have an MD or PhD. My dream job is to work at one of these funds but not sure if my current credentials (econ undergrad from semi-target and FoF) would get me there, but on the flip side I'm sure MD types in these seats get comped well for it, and would love to invest in what I think is the most interesting sector of the market by far.
Assuming I am able to get in, would med school be a viable route here? I am very hesitant to give up at least 4 yrs of earnings, >400k opportunity cost here + med school tuition seems like a very steep price to pay just to invest in your favorite sector.
Anyone been faced with a similar decision? curious to here folks thought process
I don’t think it’s crazy at all. Don’t think too much about opportunity costs when you’re young because most of your income comes later anyways. I would intern or something for a fund of choice before getting an Md Though.
You're already working in finance with a clear track to the position you want. Don't take a detour through medical school just to get some credential. Medical school doesn't teach you anything about investing. Like you said, the opportunity cost is ridiculous
