Suit and Tie to HF Interview?
Should I wear a suit and tie to a hedge fund interview? A lot of the time, at hedge fund interviews, my interviewer is in a hoodie while I am in a suit. I'm wondering if going into the office wearing a suit and tie would make me look really out of place. Any advice?
Do you have any gauge on what the dress code/culture is like? As a general rule of thumb I feel it's always best to show up to interviews in a suit because it shows you are taking both the opportunity and yourself seriously. It doesn't matter what your interviewer is wearing, they're already on the inside and get to take the liberties he's afforded as part of that. Better to overdress than underdress unless you've been explicitly told otherwise IMO. If you show up in a suit and they're in a hoodie or tee it's an automatic ice-breaker you and the interviewer can chuckle about for a few seconds before launching into things so it seems like a win-win.
Suit and tie shows that you respect the occasion I think. Candidates go for interviews in suits, at companies where they'd never be expected to wear one on the job
I used to go on zip pullovers and shirts underneath, and it was fine. Just because as you said many HFs (esp. SMs) wear stuff like North Face and On shoes and I feel embarrassed to go on a suit. But generally, the overdress rule which everyone talks about is safe.
don't forget your backpack with your suit.
