A couple reasons. Global macro is just a more fun seat if you enjoy keeping up with markets and geopolitics. Depending where you are and the type of hf (pure discretionary,rv, or "quantamental") you can be creative and help with idea generation for trades. Compared to s&t (where also depending on what you are trading) you are more so confined and less flexible in idea generation. For example, a lot of products such as vanilla fx and fixed income tend to be driven less by having an "edge". If you are on an exotic options desk there is more room for "thinking" and idea generation in your trades. Also most people try to exit out of S&T to global macro, so if you already have an offer at a hf you can jump straight in. I wouldn't worry about sustainability. Trading and working at a global macro hf both require risk taking, so if you're worried about that then idk.

Yeah makes sense. From what I saw on my last internship in sell side, I think the traders have a decent amount of ideas they can take on their book but yeah not as much as hf. The post on here about Brevan made me think haha. (its not them though). The main advantage of S&T is options I think from the start although I guess I just have to think whether I wanna do defo do macro vs something like EQD trdaing. Guess I'll think about it
