No right answer, just go wherever you get an offer if you like the guy you'll be working for. I used to work at Citadel and bounced around a couple other funds.

  • Don't go to a pod outside of the big 4 and Citadel/Millennium are preferred.
  • Nothing to say about the big tiger cubs. If you can get an offer, you'll obviously take it. Ignore the chirping from the pod analysts here. Maybe you won't learn as much as your buddy that covers more than 10 stocks but who cares.
  • I really like the people at Third Point and it will give you great branding. Altimeter is a clown show. ValueAct not a good place to be long term. Dragoneer is a really really good fund and pays amazing (though my info could be dated).
  • My smartest friend from college works at Farallon fwiw. They are incredible investors and are very well respected. They should be #1 on everyone's lists.
  • Viking is a difficult place to work nowadays but you will probably learn the most there and will be fine either way if things don't pan out.
  • Weiss I believe does more esoteric stuff. Don't know if it's a good place to start a career in l/s.
  • Holocene and Alyeska are killer funds. Woodline I would put below them and Freestone below Woodline.
  • DK has smart guys and I believe trains well. Culture is good and have a friend who has stayed for a very long time.

What makes you say Holocene and Alyeska are killer funds? How would you stack them up against the big 4 (other than AUM)?

Nothing crazy. Just better PMs and processes. BH at Holocene has a fantastic reputation and they hire top people. Both are better seats than the vast majority of big 4 pods, but the absolute best teams at C/M are in a class of their own. Can't provide much nuance because I'm relaying word of mouth from buddies at said funds.
