What is comp like at Baupost?
Just pure curiosity lol. Baupost is hailed as a great place, so I'm wondering how well analysts are comped there. Specifically pre-MBA analysts. Understandably there's a lack of data at the analyst level, but I would be curious to hear what estimates you guys would put on comp. Thanks!
Bump. Would it be competitive with the MMs? Or less capital/selectivity so lower pay
Lol
Bump
Maybe start with “Baupost seems very prestigious blah blah” so how many people do they exactly hire a year?
I’ve heard some outrageous number for pre-MBA role right out of IB. I almost don’t want to repeat it because it was so high but something north of $400k combo of salary and a guaranteed bonus + additional discretionary bonus that is potentially over $200k. An estimate range would be low $400k - high $600k. Would caveat with they don’t hire on a regular basis and could offer varying comp packages based on candidate experience, hiring need, and plain old how much they want someone.
Sounds within reason given that it's Baupost, but still crazy. On another note, I just came across a profile on LinkedIn of someone who went to Baupost as an investment analyst straight out of undergrad. Didn't know they accepted undergrad hires.
What were his background, school, major and internships
Is 400-600k really that crazy? For someone with 4YOE joining a top HF?
It sounds like the other commenter was saying this was for post IB so assuming only 2 YOE
For some cubs and pods I've heard way higher for Y1 (and I've paid ppl higher :))
mind sharing the pod numbers?
I hired someone 1 year after IB, we had an incredible year (best % and $pnl year of my life), and I paid him $1m. I only have 3-4 guys and he’s very sharp / contributed to gains so it was well deserved. Thought very fair. But don’t focus on Y1 HF comp — mine was like $150k. Y1 - Y2.5 are just for you to learn / absorb / make PM life easy. But you HAVE to be scrappy, get ideas in book, be right / have good luck, and most importantly, gain PM trust. Can’t stress how important that last one is
At any fund it’s hard to make 7 figs Y1 - Y2.5 regardless of MM or SM, I just think it’s completely dependent on the fund. Maybe 5-6 SMs and 10-20 pods across big 4 is it doable for analyst to consistently make $1-4+. If you’re making more than that as an analyst, you’ll prob become a PM soon or if not @ current firm, lateral and become PM elsewhere (unless you want career analyst, can make huge $ there too). But yes, analysts at the best pods (who can be very very young) can make more than analysts at best SMs, but without a sleeve I don’t think you could make over $1. Kinda need to manage legit risk to pull in mid 7 figures as an analyst
If you want to manage risk / be a key decision maker and get paid at a young age (all meaning you have to correctly bet on yourself), I’d say come to a pod 100%
