1st Year Analyst Feeling Grossly Incompetent. How do I learn?
Hey everyone, I need some honest advice.
I started in IB two weeks ago, and I leave every day feeling like I haven't accomplished anything. I’m physically busy and constantly at my desk, but I'm not producing anything of value. This week I was put on my first pitch (staffed Friday afternoon for a Wednesday senior turn). I didn't contribute anything meaningful because I just don't know what they want yet. My VP and Associate essentially took over, did the heavy lifting, and completely faded me out of the process because I was too slow.
I feel terrible about it, but I genuinely don't know what else to do and I’m giving it my absolute best. How am I supposed to learn if I get cut out when the pressure is on? How do you actually get faster and anticipate what they need when you're starting from scratch?
Any advice on how to push through this phase would be greatly appreciated.
Sounds like my analyst. The value add of an analyst is to share burden of associates and VPs with speed and precision. The fact that they don’t let you do anything when they are jammed is alarming. Try to ramp up.
Thank you for the feedback
Being awake at this ungodly hour. At lease you are trying. Keep it up.
Do a lot of practice deliverables and prove to the team you are willing to improve.
It sounds like the pitch was too near-term to have you mess up so the seniors took care of it. I wouldn’t stress and I promise you there’s no hard feelings from the ASO / VP.
