1st Year Analyst Leaving. Will I still get my bonus?

I am leaving a bulge bracket after my first year. I will have completed more than 365 days since the start date on my offer letter. However, I have to leave before my bonus gets paid to my account due to my next job requiring me to start very early.

If I leave after my bonus number is communicated to me but before it hits my account will I still get my bonus? Obviously I would like to stay the couple more weeks until after my bonus gets paid, but due to circumstances, I cannot do that.

I appreciate any insight that can be provided on this matter. Thank you.

How many weeks difference are we talking? Any chance you could do the new job for a delayed start? Honesty, do you have any family members you could claim you need to take care of or anything else that you can use as an excuse for that delay?

If it’s only a 1-2 week period, perhaps if it’s not another bank, maybe don’t quit until a week in? If it’s not a direct competitor (startup), first week is likely slow anyway and you likely aren’t doing any actual work.

Almost all banks require you to be employed up to and including the day that payments are made. If you resign after communication day, but before the actual payout, you will get a big fat zero. It's standard to be "made whole" when moving jobs in this industry so you need to ask your new employer to either (i) wait until you get paid (push back your start date), or (ii) make you whole. If they refuse to do this they are showing their true colors to you (major red flag) and personally I wouldn't want to work for a company that makes such a major fuss over this. Quite frankly, your bonus is a drop in the ocean compared to the total staffing budget for any financial services firm. If they refuse to make you whole it shows a sign of stinginess that will likely follow through on future comp when you get to that firm.

Not true at all. 2nd year analysts at many banks traditionally leave before bonus day (and in some cases before bonuses are even communicated) and are almost always still paid out. Obviously that's a different situation since employers don't want to gain a reputation of screwing over juniors who have completed their 2 year obligation. They'll have much less latitude for someone leaving after 1 year though

Yes, with regards to the typical 2-year IB analyst program in the US, you are right that many banks view the bonus as a form of deferred comp that gets paid regardless. Departures in almost all other circumstances (such as leaving after 1 year) are likely to be treated in line with the general policy of needing to be fully employed.

365 days since start date means nothing. You should assume the bonus is not yours until it hits your account, especially given you’re bouncing after only a year. Some banks have a certain date prior to bonus payment (usually a week or so before) which entitles you to the bonus as long as you’re employed by that date - but even so, it’s still at their discretion if you give notice before it’s actually paid.

Given you’re young, you probably didn’t push back at all when the new employer suggested a start date. You should go back to them, explain the situation, and ask to push back. I highly doubt that your services as a 23 yr old IB burnout are so critical that they can’t wait a few more weeks.

OP here. Thanks for the information and advice everyone! Glad I checked here first instead of with HR. I likely would have lost out on a good chunk of change!

At Jefferies - as long as it was communicated to the group before leaving you could leave early and still get a bonus if you were employed as of the bonus record date (~June 30th). Had a couple of first-years do that who will still get a bonus in August even though they left at/around June 30th.

Looking at other comments, didn't realize this was the exception not the norm.
