1st year - bottom bucket

I got my feedback a while ago, and was told that I would be getting bottom bucket for this year but promoted to AN2.

This is a bit what I expected as it was a bit harder for me to hit the curve and took longer but made significant progress and improvement towards the tail end of the year.

For context, I am at an American BB in EMEA.

The way I looked at it was that I got valuable feedback that I could action in my AN2 year and turn things around, as clearly I had demonstrated towards the end of the year that I was able to do so and from speaking to people in the team, that is the impression they had too.

My question is this:  has anyone else been in the same position? You see a lot on this forum of people posting being top bucket, or upset about being mid bucket, but not really much from people who got ranked bottom bucket. Is this "okay" and, going into my second year with the mindset to be fully malleable, work even harder, and really action the feedback I was given, will I have the "chance" to turn things around?

Thanks.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, being ranked bottom bucket in your first year is not the end of the road, and many have successfully turned things around in their second year. Here are some key takeaways and advice from others who have been in similar situations:

  1. Actionable Feedback is Key:

    • Negative feedback, while tough to hear, can be a gift if you use it constructively. Focus on the specific areas highlighted in your review and work on improving them.
    • Seek regular interim feedback from your team to ensure you're on the right track and can make quick adjustments.
  2. Mindset and Work Ethic:

    • Many analysts who went from bottom to top bucket emphasized doubling down on their role, working longer hours, and deliberately practicing to address weak points.
    • Build strong relationships with your team and seniors. Being seen as approachable and hardworking can make a significant difference.
  3. Luck and Circumstances:

    • Success in rankings is often a mix of skill, effort, and luck. Getting staffed on good deals or working with supportive seniors can help.
    • If your team culture is not conducive to growth, consider whether lateraling to a better environment might be an option in the future.
  4. Examples of Turnarounds:

    • One analyst shared that they went from bottom bucket to top bucket by sacrificing personal time, focusing on their deals, and ensuring no doubts about their performance.
    • Another noted that culture and mentorship played a big role. Moving to a team that provided better support helped them excel.
  5. Sustainability and Balance:

    • While it's important to work hard, don't burn out. Many who achieved top bucket rankings later realized the importance of balance, such as exercising, eating healthy, and managing stress.

In summary, your mindset to be "fully malleable" and action the feedback is the right approach. With consistent effort, deliberate practice, and a focus on building relationships, you absolutely have the chance to turn things around in your second year. Many have done it before, and so can you!
