Absolute Toxicity - Need to Lateral

Hi everyone!

For anonimity, I’ll try to keep most details vague while giving as best context as I can.

I’m at an EB (joined about 2-3 months ago) and it has been absolute hell.

I’m not in standard M&A - more “Advisory”. The EB is (I think) known for having a great culture, not the worst hours and really good leadership. Except for my team.

It’s been an absolute nightmare! While I don’t mind the hours (approx. 80-90 p.w.) the analysts and associates on my deal teams are horrible. They have no teamwork, no friendship and no looking out for each other.

This job means a lot to me (like everyone else) and I want to stay in banking but I just can’t keep working in this team. A month or so ago, it got so bad that I developed extreme anxiety was shaking and my heart was pounding for 48 hours straight.

That’s when I stopped giving a sh*t and started just banging out what I was told to do.

For more context, I didn’t even want to be in this team but rather a different coverage group - who I’ve been speaking with and it would be a fairytale place for me, which makes it all the more worse, because I wanted to be there to begin with!

I want to lateral as soon as possible but am scared that while I try, someone will find out and I get the can.

I had a talk with an analyst and senior aso already, soon to speak with a director but have no idea how to bring it up that I want to join their team. Fact is, if I could switch now - I would but know that these things take time.

I really need advice on this, so please, anything on how I can bring it up, speed up and/or start the process. What do I do? What do I say?

Again, I appreciate that this is frequently the case with a lot of junior analysts but, truly, honestly, this is the absolute worst job I’ve had and I know for a fact that 90% of other teams (at least) at my firm are waaay waaaay better off.

Thank you.

What’s the point of your comment mate? This kid literally said it’s different in other groups that he sees! Came on searching for advice and you’re just bringing him down.

I see this all the time in other teams at my firm and thank my luck for not being placed elsewhere to actually enjoy the work I do and the people I work with.

It’s guys like you that are the problem - he’s literally talking about you hahahaha

Not sure if this is for US or UK, but I’d imagine would be applicable in both.

Reckon it would be best to approach the seniors head on and explain that you’re interested in their team.

DO NOT mention that you don’t like your peers or aren’t getting along mate because that’d be considered a red flag.

Just showing interest at initial stages should be a good move. I’ve never lateraled or seen it with my own eyes but suspect shouldn’t be a problem whether you’re an intern or more senior.

Generally, I think, in good faith, you won’t be outed by the other team’s seniors. But still, be very careful and good luck!

Sorry if not as helpful as others who have done/seen it may advise!:)
