Allen Edmunds VS. JM shoes?

Sort of random but I need to buy new shoes and I want to get something solid that will last for awhile and withstand NYC weather, rigorous streets, etc.

For all those who have experience with AE and Johnston & Murphy shoes, which do you like better? Which hold up and last longer? I know AE are probably a bit better but are also twice the price so was wonderign if the AE were worth it to justify the fact that their 2x more than J&M shoes.

Thanks.

AE, especially the park avenues. J&M used to make good shoes. How did you narrow it down to AE and JM? What other alternatives did you consider? I would look at Aldens..

I'm wearing JM loafers now and have a couple more pairs at home, pretty solid but as Buyside CFA said, they aren't the most durable. I only wear them on the weekends and a few fridays a month so I would say spend a few more dollars and get something a bit more durable. Just my .02

If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses - Henry Ford

At JA banks, they sell the AE bayfield boot. Really nice looking cap toe boots with vibram soles...great for walking around in crappy weather...but dressy enough for the office. I had a pair with dannite soles...so they weren't as "clunky" as vibram soles. But it seems like they only come in vibrams now. Someone mentioned C&J, Church's etc...never bought Church's...but I have a few C&Js. Definitely worth every penny...but they are at least 50% more than most AE shoes.

I invested in a nice pair of cap toe AE's (about $320) and a solid pair of JM loafers (about $140) for my internship this summer. It was the first time I had actually spent a decent sum of money on shoes, and I was blown away. Both were very comfortable. That being said, I MUCH preferred the AE's, I could have walked all day in those things. I guess you also have to take into account the price difference and type of shoe though.
