Career Resources
Are these actual IB groups? I've seen other Rx consulting firms and more operational advisory firms like FTI post "Investment Banking" jobs.
I've been on a situation where we worked across one of the big ones, and they were supposedly acting in the capacity of a creditor advisor like an IB. They were very much still viewed as and acted more in the capacity of an operational advisor, did more accounting / forensic-type work, and seemed to lack general big-picture advisory capabilities like a traditional Rx group. We sort of laughed at them and still make jokes about the deal. Was to a point where they were asking us what their clients were up to and why their clients were requesting things from the debtor.
Curious if these roles are just a pretty outlandish stretch of title here.
Rx consultants are probably punching air right now
Lol given your response, not going to be pursuing this... This is what a recruiter sent me:
"We are currently working with Alavarez & Marsal who are actively looking for a strong Investment Banking Analyst to join their full serviced group in which you will gain exposure/experience across the Restructuring industry as well as multiple different industries in a generalist capacity. The group predominantly works within the Restructuring space and the current pipeline is as strong as it has ever been for the team. Within Restructuring they work across both debt and credit, distressed M&A, and Special Situations all $500M or more in value. This is a role where you will truly get the chance to gain a ton of strong hands-on deal experience and be staffed on several live deals at a time. Furthermore, you will have exposure to a variety of products and the chance to immediately interact with clients. This is a team that is truly looking to invest in their Analyst bankers and are looking to help further advance your career. This is a top priority for the group, with the team targeting 2-3 headcount given how strong deal flow is currently." I confirmed it was not an advisory/accounting/consulting role but an IB RX analyst position.
I’m not in rx but I know for a fact they are a consulting firm and don’t have “investment bankers”. Just helping you verify that even though you already did haha
They’re a consulting firm - that post is (likely) misleading because they want to hire a former investment banker for the role. RX consulting likes former Transaction folks, accountants, and bankers since they don’t really hire from undergrad. They’re essentially hoping that someone with one of those backgrounds stumbles upon that posts, sees “investment banking” in the job title, and applies.
Could anyone distinguish between the roles of an RX consultant and RX IB'er?
Rx consultant does stuff like forecast 13 week cash flow, cash conservation, managing working capital from ops side
Rx banker will be thinking about ways to address liquidity/debt maturity from liability/capital structure standpoint
Difference is mostly in level of abstraction - consulting is more micro whereas bankers are working in the macro
RX consultants charge by the hour…RX bankers charge retainer/transaction/financing/tail fee
I know this thread is a bit stale but not sure why people are commenting that the job post is misleading or that intern saying he's not even in RX but knows "for a fact that they are a consulting firm and don't have 'investment bankers'".... lol.
A&M's bread and butter is definitely RX Consulting, otherwise known as NACR (North American Commercial Restructuring). While I can't comment much on our IB arm, we most certainly have one. I'd assume they typically focus on creditor side mandates given the obvious conflict of interest with our NACR practice being entirely debtor-side focused. No idea on pay or anything, but did see someone recently exit to a MM PE as a reference point.
What are your thoughts on doing RX consulting as an incremental step toward rx investment banking? are the skill sets in any way transferable?
