Q&A: Online / eMBA to Director in Restructuring at EB

Hello WSO community. I've done a number of AMAs in the past cataloging my journey into investment banking and wanted to post a new thread as a follow-up in case helpful to folks at earlier stages on the path / interested in breaking in from a non-traditional background.

Brief summary of my path:

  • Undergrad from a complete non-target (small, no-name private liberal arts school that didn't even have finance clubs)
  • Graduated in 2009 (great time to graduate from such a place!) with no job
  • Ended up working in commissioned sales to pay the bills and ultimately pursued an online MBA to retool my skill set with the goal of breaking into investment banking; specifically, I had a strong interest in rx (in part motivated by my personal experience of trying to start a career in a major recessionary environment)
  • Didn't place in IB from my MBA (online MBA was much harder to recruit from; and this was 10+ years ago when it was even harder / more looked down on to do MBA online)
  • Ended up in corporate banking at a super-regional on the credit side for a stint (~4 years) from which I lateralled internally to do coverage
  • Lateralled from there to do transaction diligence (QofE, QofA, NWC true-ups, and related financial diligence) primarily in connection with LBOs for ~2 years
  • All the while (since enrolling in MBA), never stopped wanting to end up in restructuring banking, so continued researching / honing my knowledge and skills / networking / applying to jobs in IB rx as well as A&M, FTI, Conway MacKenzie (now Riveron) rx consulting roles
  • Eventually made it and have been in rx for a few years since and am now a director at an EB rx firm

Ask me anything!

What is Riveron’s RX reputation and would you say it’s a good place to start out at as a senior associate? Also how has RX been for you in your experience?
