Analysts - How Long Until You Actually Built a Model?
When you guys first hit the desks, how long were you doing smaller, more menial tasks until you were actually tasked to build a model? Obviously "modeling" is kind of a vague term, but I'm generally referring to any task that required you to spread some financials, make some assumptions and projections, and ultimately arrive at a desired outcome (purchase price, MOIC, whatever it may be). i.e. not refreshing a template or replacing a couple values, but actually taking liberty over some complex financial analysis.
From reading this forum it seems like the minute people are thrown on the desk they're churning out massive LBOs with hundreds of tabs. Obviously the older Analysts and Associates would rather do this stuff themselves than trust you with it, especially if it's time-sensitive and important. So how long did it take until you developed some autonomy with regards to modeling? And what work were you given along the way as you were learning the ropes?
