Anxiety in IB

Is it typical for bankers to experience social anxiety for things such as interviews, networking, presentations, etc? If so, how do they deal with it? I typically get very nervous in these scenarios, affecting my ability to do the tasks well, and I would like to have this fixed before it gets out of hand.

Social anxiety in investment banking is not uncommon, especially given the high-pressure environment and the emphasis on networking, interviews, and presentations. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and strategies to address this:

  1. Preparation is Key: Anxiety often stems from uncertainty. Thoroughly prepare for interviews and presentations by practicing common questions, knowing your resume inside out, and rehearsing your talking points. For networking, have a list of icebreaker questions or topics ready to steer conversations naturally.

  2. Practice Social Skills: Social skills can be developed like any other skill. Public speaking classes, Toastmasters, or even speaking up more in casual settings can help build confidence over time. One user shared how public speaking classes and engaging more in class discussions helped them feel more comfortable in professional settings.

  3. Cognitive Behavioral Techniques: Breaking down negative thought patterns and replacing them with positive affirmations can help. For example, instead of thinking, "I will mess up this presentation," focus on, "I am well-prepared, and I can handle this."

  4. Simulate Scenarios: Practice mock interviews or presentations with friends, mentors, or even in front of a mirror. This helps you get used to the pressure and reduces nervousness over time.

  5. Leverage Resources: Use platforms like WSO, Glassdoor, and Indeed to research common interview questions and scenarios. Writing down answers and practicing them repeatedly can make you feel more in control.

  6. Take Small Steps: Start with low-stakes interactions, like casual coffee chats or small group discussions, to build confidence gradually. Over time, these small wins can help you tackle larger challenges like formal presentations or high-stakes networking events.

  7. Relaxation Techniques: Techniques like deep breathing, meditation, or even short walks before high-pressure situations can help calm your nerves.

  8. Understand It's Normal: Many in the industry feel the same way. Even seasoned professionals experience nerves before big presentations or interviews. The key is to channel that energy into preparation and focus.

Remember, social anxiety doesn't have to define your performance. With consistent effort and the right strategies, you can overcome it and thrive in the high-stakes world of investment banking.

As someone who has social anxiety and is an A2 I can give my 2C.

Typically social anxiety worsens when you isolate and if anything in banking you are thrown into interactions on an everyday basis whether that be admins, people on your deal team, other analysts from other teams etc.

So usually you get used to talking and being social very fast. But some directors and others aren’t as good with client interaction so everyone has things to work on.

Having a sociable personality is important and can help in reviews but as a junior banker what’s more important is getting through the trenches.
