Any NYC investment bankers looking to live together in Bushwick?
Looking for roommates to live together in Bushwick. Not tryna pay 4-5K just to live alone when we can get a 3 bed apartment to share. I checked and it’s about 35 minutes to midtown and much quicker to fidi. #nyc #housing
I live in Bushwick and don't recommend it. That ~35 min estimate is under the most ideal circumstances. Don't get me wrong, Bushwick is cool and cheap, but not worth the commute when you are working late nights and have to get up earlier than your peers to get to work on time imo (with padding for the lines having more variability the further out you are).
35 mins isnt bad. I wouldn’t mind the commute for the money I save so I can spend less time cooking and meal prepping. I also hung out in Brooklyn a lot, only hesitation would be finding that many people and everyone else being okay with a 30 min. We are looking to be off the L train since it runs frequently
Dude... "~35 min estimate is under the most ideal circumstances" means closer to 40 - 45 mins regularly. You also have to take into account proximity to your closest station. I had the same thought going in about the 35 mins. As someone who is currently doing this commute - It is not worth it. just to hammer in all of the cons you probably haven't thought of.
- Most/all of your friends and other analysts will live in Manhattan. It makes it a lot less fun/likely to regularly visit friends when it takes that long to get there
- After a night out in Manhattan and you want to Uber home, that's gonna cost you ~$60-70
- Brooklyn lines are less reliable
- If you are working late and Uber home on the company's dime - you only shave maybe 5 - 10 mins off your commute. A 30 min car ride home while you are still getting comments at 1am is not a fun experience
- The day that I am writing this, it took me an hour and 5 mins to get to the office door to door
Bushwick would a much better location for you if your office was located at or below 14th Street. If you work in Midtown and are looking for alternative places outside of the city, I’d say take a look at Fort Greene in Brooklyn, which is 4-5 stops from Midtown. Boerum Hill is a very nice area but more pricey and is next to the A. You can get to Midtown in under 30 mins. Last recommendation is something along the 7 train in LIC/Astoria.
I’m in Williamsburg (off Graham L) and don’t mind my commute to midtown. Honestly many areas in Brooklyn are unarguably the best places to live in the city. I don’t think I could ever be happy living in the sterile east 40s… Many of my coworkers live in Manhattan and have just as long, if not longer commutes.
Granted, Bushwick is further out. Check off the Morgan or Jefferson L stops and don’t go too deep to Dekalb or further.
LIC is a decent option, but the neighborhood is small and always felt a bit sad and post-apocalyptic.
Agreed. People overly exaggerate a 40 min commute max. There’s also more seats when you get on at the jefferson station and even more before including the myrtle wyckoff station with L and M. Granted the M train goes to midtown but is slower so I rather transfer with the L train at union.
LIC is a great option but it is double the price. I also like Bushwick a lot!
All the people above are completely wrong about the commute time lol… I commute daily from Dekalb station in Bushwick to Midtown and it’s ~30 mins everyday (very reliable). Paying $1400/Month for a newly renovated 3-bedroom apartment which gives me more weekend spending money than most of my friends
That is the goal my friend and I are looking to do. It would be nice if we can do that with a 2bed pricing but it’s prewar style so we aiming for a 3bed.
Can you pm me the name of the spot?
Think it also matters how close you are to a station.. but regardless even adding 30 minutes to an hour to your commute will take a toll when it consistently changes your 2am night to a 3am night. Also worth reiterating the point someone made above.. most people live in Manhattan and won’t want to go out to bushwhack on the weekends so you’ll be commuting into the city and then likely ubering home which will add up very quickly depending on how often you go
Will be walking distance. There’s many of those new construction apartments near the transit areas. Just worried that will be a noise disturbance but otherwise the area to manhattan is a great commute. Last summer spent a lot of time at Brooklyn mirage/ knockdown center/ and bars in the area
In theory it sounds doable, but from experience the 35 min (40+ commute in the summer when there’s tourists, trains delayed for maintenance, L is also just always super crowded, etc.) is tough especially since you need to transfer to get to midtown. Also just super annoying sometimes when you wake up at 7/8 to tons of emails and you’re fire drilling and can’t even make it to the office all day because you’re farther and have no down time to commute. Would recommend living in Manhattan at least the first year while you’re getting used to the job then moving out to Bushwick once you’re settled
Hate when people act like living outside of Manhattan and commuting in is a terrible idea. Have you seen rents in the city? Even for the shittiest apts, you’re paying a premium. I live in Brooklyn and only have to be in office 3x a week, probably less if I just don’t feel like that. My train ride is 30 mins. The other analysts on my team live in UES/UWS and constantly complain about how much they pay in rent with roommates (in pre-war buildings with no elevator) and their commutes are still 30-40 mins. I live solo and pay the same or less than them (I’m in post-war, elevator building with spacious apts).
Brooklyn has a ton of culture and places to hang. I can go months without traveling to Manhattan for recreation. My advice is if you really feel positive about Bushwick, do it. Don’t let someone else’s bad experience deter you. It sounds like in his case, all of his friends live in Manhattan so he is just miserable.
