Any point in applying to a BB from their career website?
Is there any point to applying to a BB's career website without knowing any current employees who can vouch for you? Does HR even look at resumes on there considering they probably get thousands?
Luck of the draw through online. I got picked up for a JPM real estate AM interview last year just through an online app, and a friend got picked up for a JPM ib interview.
You miss 100% of the shots you don't take. Filling out those applications doesn't take more than 10-15 minutes, might as well apply
Is there a point to putting the "optional cover letter" in an online application?
Yes. It's optional in name only. Not including it makes it look like you didn't want to do the required work.
sonnypatel Applying online doesn't cost you anything, I got picked up like that. However, try to get someone to forward your CV as well.
juliana71 The cover letter is quite helpful.
It won't hurt. I got an interview that way.
However it does help if there is something unique about your resume. In my case there is one award on my resume that is very well known and tends to catch attention.
I was under the impression everyone applies but tries to get a contact to push their app?
Or am I wrong and that people just network and don't apply..
Half and half - I usually don't apply and just network, except for on-campus stuff.
When I was doing recruitment through back door channels, I would be told to apply on the website well after I had interviewed / gotten an offer for bureaucratic purposes though, so it definitely doesn't hurt.
Yes definitely apply, even if you don't have somebody to push you through. Otherwise you're guaranteed to not get the position, yeah? I personally was able to secure multiple interviews at BBs without any internal referrals during SA recruiting, and I didn't even go to a target.
Last time I was recruiting a couple years ago I applied to two BB's, received interviews & offers, via career website. Their internal recruiters are very good at screening applicants.
.
Yes, there is a point in applying through a careers website. Yes, they get '000s of CVs. So you better make sure you stand out.
If you be livin that #nontargetlifestyle
the success rate for targets tossing their resumes in the pool is pretty low too
Depends, are you looking for a job with the company?
I got IBD SA interviews that way at 2 BBs and 2 EBs...
Always apply, and then try to find someone internal to help you move along.
I think Marcus Haberstram mentioned that if they actually do go to the gigantic pile of resumes to screen applicants, it helps if your last name starts with a letter close to the beginning of the alphabet since everything is sorted alphabetically.

Shooters shoot
Miss 100% of the shots you don't take. My path to FT started with throwing my resume in the pile. Supplement that with networking to improve your chances of getting drawn out of that pile.
Just a question to those who had success, did you have significant experience/high GPAs? I understand that you miss 100% of the shots you don't take but what if you have like a 3.3 and no IB experience? Is that even worth it without networking?
