Anybody knows about JPM - Got a job in HK
I'm wondering anybody in this forum working in JPM? I have a question about its internal mobility. Say if I got a job in HongKong, is that possible I apply to relocate to US after 1 or 2 years?

I have heard from several JPM employees that they are very willing to help you get to where you want to be. Mobility is a big plus of working at JPM.
JPM is very good when it comes to relocating/rotating their analysts after their 2-3 stints. i.e. a good friend of mine works in their PB in the U.S. He sat down with his MD recently and told him that he wanted to work in Hong Kong in X division once his 3 years were up. The MD said "great" and made it happen for him.
Of course this all depends on your performance as an analyst and whether or not your superiors and peers want to make the transition happen for you. JPM also prefers not to A2A at the same locations into the same divisions because even as an associate most of the people above you will naturally always think of you as an analyst. I'm sure all the BBs think along the same lines, but I've heard this several times about JPM.
Thank you guys that's very helpful. My concern is that it is easier to relocate from US to HK than the other way around~~anybody ever heard somebody came from HK to US?
Network your ass off and work on some international deals. There will def be MD's and senior guys from other offices on it, so do a good job and keep in touch with them
And get rid of this gay ~~ shit
I know someone at JPM who was able to move groups and locations in her 2nd year (in IBD).
I imagine they would not be as flexible for SA's getting FT offers... am I right?
For SA, your offer is for that office for the summer, but if you perform well and express interest in other offices/groups it is a definite possibility. Groups that know they are not giving as many SAs offers as they need for FT will be looking to fill those extra spots. After mid summer reviews certain groups will start looking, and you'll know whether you are the type of candidate that will be wanted by other groups.
Why take an offer in HK if you want to be in New York? If you really want to be in New York, just join a firm that gives you an offer in NY.
Transferring for HK to NY is possible and does happen - no one does it because it doesn't really make sense to do so. As a third year, you're potentially up for the A2A promote. In HK, the A2A promote happens pretty naturally - in New York, it doesn't. Also, along with the A2A issue, all the goodwill you build up the first two years goes out the window if you change to NY your third year. You have to start over, and pray you perform well enough that you get the A2A promote.
Also, as you start moving up (3rd year +), the 15% HK tax and the increased housing stipend in HK is going to make a non-trivial difference in your expected compensation.
Edit: Also, the mobility depends on your visa status. If you are a foreign national (e.g. Chinese/HK), the firm will have to sponsor you to put you in New York. JPM definitely cut sponsorship during the financial crisis - not sure if they've resumed it. On the other hand, if you're a US Citizen working in HK, it probably is not hard at all.
+1 - i personally know someone who was a summer associate with JPM IBD while at a very-top-tier MBA program but was not granted the sponsorship he needed to come back full time and had to go elsewhere (in his case outside of IB)
may have changed after the financial crisis though
a good friend of mine just went on rotation for a year to London. if you're good enough, after two years you have an option of working at another JPM office for a year. Also interviewed with an associate who moved from Melbourne to NY after his analyst years... so yes, coming to NYC is possible with the program.
