In all coverage areas except infrastructure, SMBC is almost always a participating bank rather than leading the financing, including Sponsor coverage.


At best, they serve on a right side role. However, they are mostly term takers who are allocated a small piece of the financing. 

Japanese banks are notorious for slow decision making and low risk appetite. This makes it nearly impossible for them to lead financings.

 

This means limited exits to private credit and other buy side roles, except for project finance which has great exits. Most people have to lateral to a different bank (which is possible) to get to the buy side.


I’ve found SMBC has a general reputation as a low tier bank in the marketplace, which is accurate
