Career Resources
Based on the most helpful WSO content, office politics are indeed present at the analyst level in investment banking. Here are some key points:
Building Relationships: It's emphasized that building relationships is crucial in banking and finance. Analysts who engage in social events and build rapport with partners often get ranked higher, even if they aren't the hardest workers or the smartest. This suggests that being involved in office politics can significantly impact your career progression.
Political Capital: At the junior level, political capital is largely about being liked. While the quality of your work is important, being liked by your peers and superiors can influence decisions in your favor.
Promotions and Bonuses: Promotions and bonuses are often based on your perceived ability to generate deals. Excellent social skills and the ability to build relationships can lead to faster promotions and better bonuses.
Complexity at Senior Levels: As you move up the ranks, office politics become more complex. It's not just about being liked but also about understanding who has influence and what they care about.
In summary, while you may dislike office politics, they are an integral part of the investment banking environment, even at the analyst level. Building relationships and being liked can play a significant role in your career advancement.

Absolutely; even more so if the shop is on the smaller side.
can you please give me examples of what political things an analyst might have do or encounter?
for example: if i'm a member of a club, and there's a task that is coveted, but one person has the experience or background to do it, but another person wants it, and they say a weird reason for why they should (to me at least) irrationally do that thing, this to me is political. is it like this as an analyst? i can image for higher ups it's kind of a similar thing to my club example where certain groups are assigned things for whatever reason.
Examples of the advantage of being more likeable (ceteris paribus):
Staffed on a better deal (may mean lesser hours or higher profile).
More flexibility/margin of error with mistakes or needs.
Higher likelihood of top bucket bonus.
Its bullshit but it is what it is. Never undermine the importance of corporate politics.
is there conflict between analysts, like one analysts does little and gets upset when you don't do their work or something? but compared to other fields, what you've described isn't that bad to me.
