Asia to NYC IBD?

Hey all, incoming FT IBD analyst at a BB (GS/MS/JPM) HK/SG office. Moving to NYC has always been a goal of mine and I’m wondering how I should approach lateraling over, preferably without having to do an MBA stateside.

What does the lateral recruiting process look like? Are there structured processes for this or networking-based?

Is there a hiring timeline for laterals?

Would banks be at all interested in hiring candidates from APAC?

Any thoughts or insights would be much appreciated.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know about lateraling from Asia to NYC in IBD:

  1. Lateral Recruiting Process: The process is generally unstructured. While some banks may post openings, many lateral opportunities are filled through networking or direct outreach. It’s crucial to actively reach out to contacts at banks in NYC, cold email, or leverage connections from your current firm. Headhunters can also be helpful, but networking tends to be more effective for lateral moves.

  2. Hiring Timeline: Lateral positions often open up after bonuses are paid out, typically around June/July. However, opportunities can arise throughout the year, so it’s important to stay vigilant and proactive. Setting up notifications on job aggregators like LinkedIn or Indeed can help you catch openings as they appear.

  3. Interest in APAC Candidates: Banks in NYC are open to hiring candidates from APAC, especially if you’re coming from a top BB like GS/MS/JPM. Highlighting your deal experience and transferable skills is key. Your current BB brand will work in your favor, but you’ll need to demonstrate why you’re a strong fit for the NYC market.

  4. Key Tips:

    • Resume: Ensure your resume is polished and emphasizes your deal experience. Consider using services like WSO’s investment banking resume review for a competitive edge (url: https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/wso-finance-resume-review).
    • Networking: Reach out to alumni, colleagues, or anyone in your network who has made a similar move. Cold emailing bankers in NYC can also open doors.
    • Persistence: The process can take time, ranging from weeks to months. Be prepared for variability in timelines and outcomes.

If you’re serious about making the move, start building relationships and positioning yourself now. NYC banks value strong candidates with global experience, and your background in a BB APAC office can be a strong asset.

I think your best bet is working for a year or two then beginning to conduct some outreach. Chances are there are some people from SG/HK in those offices and may be able to help you out.
