Back Office -> Grad School -> Front Office?
Hello All, first post, although I have been a silent observer for a few months. I'm a BO analyst at a BB with an undergraduate degree in quant finance from a non-target, but highly technical university. Looking to make the jump either to a quant or strat team position, OR just jumping in headfirst and trying IB or bust. I know that graduate school will be necessary at some point for this, so I am planning on working in my current position for 1-2 years while i a) finish paying off undergraduate loans and b) accrue some savings. While I am BO, the team and my specific role is considered fairly cutting edge, with a decent amount of business side knowledge needed. I guess I'm wondering which track I should pursue in regards to IB or strat/quant side....the hours don't bother me so much, I have the people skills to do IB, and not super concerned with the difference in prestige of the two tracks (for now).... The things that i AM concerned about are more about the likelihood of getting a job right after finishing up a graduate program; finishing up a MFE at Baruch or NYU would presumably yield a good position at either a top BB or a HF in a financial engineering role....if I decide to go the IB track, what is my best course of action? What type of graduate program would yield the best offers upon graduation? and is this something that should be done working on my current desk, or should it be done full-time? My fear is going back to school, taking on debt, then having to return to a BO position, with career not very heavily impacted... Any advice on this is appreciated, and while I understand the fundamental difference between the lifestyle of IB or FE should be a heavy factor in my decision, I am honestly satisfied with either track for the forseeable future...any advice is appreciated, thanks.
