Back-Office to Front in a different city

Hey, everyone. I am currently a Junior Finance student at a non-target school interning this summer at a BB in a non-NYC city. I'd like to get a job in NYC after I graduate possibly at the same firm or another IB in the front office. I was curious at the possibility of this because of how I am being placed in a back-office function this summer. I know most IBs hire their interns and don't hire externally for entry-level positions, but has anyone here done something like this?

Getting FO may be very difficult from this situation but it doesn’t hurt to network and apply. I’d suggest targeting MO or CIB roles. I’ve seen many people go from a CIB type role to pure IB (Analyst programs -> placement outside original group)

You could definitely try that, I’m in a situation where I’m CIB focused on a specific product, and after my analyst program attempting to move internally to a pure FO IB role with a very similar product. Makes sense to stay in the same “area”, going from Credit Risk/Market Risk to say M&A would be a drastic longshot, but Credit Risk to DCM/LevFin is more achievable.
