Background check - Last available semester GPA

Hi !

I recently received and accepted an internship offer at a BB in London, background check should start soon.

I haven’t graduated yet and I put the exact GPA of my last available semester (3.84) on my CV (which I can justify with an official document) and I wrote the same GPA as expected on the online application form (since I didn’t graduate yet cause I am in my final year). I did this because I thought this was obvious that the GPA on the CV was expected (as I have not graduated yet) and because I expect better grades in my last year.

I don’t know if this could cause an issue for my background check, and since I didn’t wanted to fool anybody by writing I’m wondering if I should contact the HR to explain this.

Interning at this BB would really mean meeting a career goal for me and having my offer rescinded because of this would be terrible for me, that is why I want to do anything necessary to clarify this.

Do you guys have any advice on this ?

Thank you very much for your help.

How did you even get the internship offer?

This is common sense buddy. That said it's better to admit you were a fool and tell HR. That way you can reset and find a boutique hopefully. Otherwise you will get blacklisted which will be even worse.

Blacklisted for this ? I didn't lied or anything and i written that the GPA was "expected" on the application form, that would be horrible to be blacklisted for this honestly ...

The issue here is that its well known to put your cumulative GPA. I'm not sure who told you you could simply put your previous semester's GPA down. That said it really depends on where you went to college. If you went to a nontarget there's a difference between 3.8+ and below 3.7. For a target its meaningless. Either way you should just tell HR as i stated earlier. Not saying anything is where bad things can happen.

The fact is that I come from a well known engineering school and I thought grades didn’t worth that much since I have already 2 relevant 6 months internships in corporate finance.
I just thought I could write down an expected GPA on my resume, using my last semester as a proxy.
But I understand your point and will get in touch with HR soon. Any idea how to turn this ?

Thanks for you help

I'm really not sure what you are saying here. If you're saying that you got a 3.84 one semester and your cumulative GPA is way less than ofc you have to contact them. They asked for a cumulative GPA not your best GPA of any semester in college.

If you're saying that you put 3.84 as the GPA you expected to get when you graduate and specified it in your resume, but don't have that GPA yet, then I don't know, I'd probably still contact them. I've never heard of anyone getting a job with an explicitly Pro-forma GPA, but I guess if they know that then you are fine.

Now if you're saying that you put 3.84 as the cumulative GPA you had in the semester you applied for this position but now your GPA has gone up or down, then no you're fine. They're not going to expect you to have gotten exactly the same GPA after another semester of college has passed. I hope that helps.

Thanks for your help !

Maybe this will be more clear:
- On the online application, I have written 3.8 expected
- On my CV I have 3.8, didn't mentioned expected (I thought this was obvious since I haven't graduated yet but I know I was wrong)
- At the moment I applied I had a cumulative 3.7 but was expecting better grade for my last year

WoW honestly I didn't know GPA was such a big deal, I thought previous work experiences were more important by far, especially because I did 2 relevant internships with nice recommendations. So sad I just realize this.

Anyway, guess I will have to explain all this to HR soon then
